Central Georgia Lake Mini
June 6 & 7, 2009Billy: Here is the Lake Mini menu for Saturday, June 6:
Sat. Lunch 11am: hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, softdrinks deserts etc. Lunch will be free.
Sat. Dinner 5:30 pm: Fried Catfish filets or grilled Chicken, grits, beans, corn on the cob, hushpuppies, salad. Tea and soft drinks furnished. Dinner will be a donation but it will cost me $12.50 per person to pay for it.
Things people need to bring: If they desire alcohol bring their own. Folding chairs, sun screen, sun glasses, bathing suit, beach towel, I have quite a few, if you have your own life jacket bring it and if you have a couple extra bring them too. I will furnish all plates, napkins, and paper ware. We will need for you to bring some ice in a cooler if you can. We are a good ways from town.
If a few ladies would like to bring deserts that would be great. Maybe we could start up a list. Cakes and pies would be great but we will be limited on refrigeration. What we do not eat I will take to Gary Conley's the next day.
I have twenty cases of Coke classic, diet Coke, Coke Zero, and Coke no caffeine that I bought for 2.50 a case of 24 at the Navy base at Athens. If you desire something different you will need to bring your own.
Map to follow.
Perry James************
Initially, Perry asked if we could bring desserts, ice and chairs. Perry, you'll have to fill us in on any other details about what to bring. What are the side items that will go along with the fried catfish filets and the grilled chicken? Do we need to bring sweet and unsweetened tea or anything else to drink? I am sure some will want to bring wine, beer or other adult beverages, and maybe some bottles of soft drinks, too. Gary and Lynette are providing the layout of cold cuts for the Sunday gathering. What do our folks need to bring then, Gary and Lynette?
************
BB,
The gang should be prepared to bring their favorite beverage if it is other than Coke products, i.e.. Pepsi, bud lite, other adult beverages and any munchies that they would like, to include the sweet stuff. We are providing cold cuts, the fixin's for sandwiches, potato salad and soft drinks.
Folks can arrive as early as 11 a.m. We plan to eat, visit and do pontoon rides on Lake Oconee. For those that are bringing water toys, there is a boat ramp about 1/2 mile from our house. I have a jet ski, a pontoon and Lanette is bringing her pontoon. I have made arrangements with neighbors to tie excess boats, etc to their docks. It is really close in our cove and not far to the other docks.
We look forward to having everyone that can stay over till Sunday visit us on the lake. If anyone has any questions, please send them along. I will provide a map and directions soon.

What a surprize!! I have been reading about the Mid-State Lake Mini but never realized where it was going to be until today ... We also have a home on Lake Sinclair ... Just got back from there Monday ...Will be going back on the 5th or 6th of June for a week with about 12-15 members of my family ... Kids & grandkids, Sister & kids. After reading Perry's directions it's like we are very close on the lake ... I am going to try and at least stop by for a while on Saturday. Would love to see lots of the classmates I have not seen in years ... Don't know if it will be by water or land ... Will talk to my husband about best way to get there ...

Joy, just come past the balanced rocks and go all the way up the creek, to the house next to the log cabin. I have the double boathouse with a small sign on it saying "Peggy and Perry James, Brunswick, Ga." P.S it is the second log cabin.

Billy, Are you okay? Very few emails flying, just wondering. Walter Fouche'
Thanks for asking, Walter, and it sure is good hearing from you. Yep, we're home in Newnan tonight, just taking it easy after another good week at work. It is so good to be back on my feet again, even though I am not back to my old self yet after surgery. I pushed, well, let's say I hung onto a self-propelled lawn mower for several hours again today and did much better than last Friday. No, I'm not over doing it. I actually am still following "doctor's orders" and taking an hour off in the late morning or noon to rest and elevate my leg. It seems to be helping the swelling in my leg and ankle.
We had a tragedy today. Some of our church members were flying home from Panama City Beach in a private plane and crashed in a pasture in Auburn, AL. Sasha Medina was a young man who had come through our youth group and was a college student. The pilot and owner of the plane, Sam Jones, was a judge in Atlanta, and the father of two of our members. The Judge was not a member of our church. The younger fellow, Sasha Medina, was a member. Just goes to show you never know when your time is going to come. There should be something on the 11:00 pm news about it if you folks in the Atlanta area want to listen in. One of the TV channels in Atlanta, Channel 11, had a nice tribute to Judge Stanford Jones. Seems that he was a Juvenile Court judge and really had a heart for troubled teenagers in the metro area. He was just 56 and could have already retired, but wanted to continue on trying to help and protect youngsters.
We'll be up late tonight if anyone wants to "check in". It's been a while since we have had a real good "Friday Night" with the Class of '67 and only the Class of '67. Haven't sent much to the Friends of '67 group this week. Still looking for an email operator to take over that group. If one of you would like to give it a try, please let me know. My hope is that I can direct all of my efforts in the Class of '67. Just let me know.
Love to all,

Billy,
I, too, am sorry about your loss. Late yesterday afternoon, a friend at our table received word about the Judge and passengers in the crash. His work with young people must have been known around this state.
Janis Garrett Boland************
Hi Billy,
We had a great cruise, a short cruise, but nice. It's always nice to just get away and relax a bit. We were actually going to Russia this week on a long cruise, but Ken needs his other knee replaced, and that just seemed too much for him right now. Maybe next year.I am glad that you are doing better. Being back at work is always a good thing. Take care of yourself and continue to feel better. I was very sad to have learned of your friends in the plane crash, such a tragedy.
Happy spring!
Suzanne Todd Jarman************
Billy,
So sorry to hear of the losses from the plane crash. Please know my thoughts and prayers will be with those family and friends.Just wanted to let everyone know that I am scheduled for total knee replacement on May 19th, Tuesday morning at 7:30 AM at University Hospital in Augusta. The surgery is one that I have needed for a long time, but needed to have some "age" on me before it could be done. People have asked me if I am scared, and the answer is no.....God will be with me. But I am somewhat anxious about the whole ordeal. Several of our dear classmates have been so encouraging and helpful with their advice, and I am so grateful. I do ask for everyone's prayers for the next few weeks. I will have my cell phone with me at the hospital, but will probably not talk very well on Tuesday. A friend of mine will call you, Billy, when it is all over.
Thank you. dear friends, for your love, care and concern. Each of you are family to me.
Betty Trotter Sharrock************
Betty, if my 85+ year old mom could handle two in two years, you should be just fine witrh one! The recovery will be bothersome and yes, for a little while it'll hurt worse than your knee did, but that will go away in days. And you KNOW you will be incessantly prayed over.
Danny Barker************
Guess you will be high kicking when it is all done and u r back to normal.
U and Billy B can have a foot race. Good luck by the way.

Betty Trotter Sharrock Knee Replacement SurgeryThis morning Betty T's friend called to say that Betty T's knee replacement surgery went well and as expected. That was at about 10:30am and she would be in Recovery for at least one hour. Thank goodness the worst part is over, and now Betty T is on the road to recovery.
I wonder if she is asleep in her hospital bed, and if they are making her get up and try it out yet. Why don't we see if we can get through to her on her cell phone. Who will be first to email back with a Betty T Knee Report?
BB************
Hi all,
I went by and saw Betty after work (the hospital is walking distance from the VA). When I got there, she had two friends visiting and was talking up a blue streak. She is on IV Morphine so is feeling no pain. She is also on Warfarin (blood thinner for clot prevention) and oxygen. She has her cell phone handy and all charged up to take calls. She was eating a lemon Italian ice that she said was good; they have her on a clear diet today. She feels certain they did an excellent job, although it was a difficult, three hour operation. When I left she was starting to get sleepy and was going to nap. She hopes to leave the hospital Friday. Until then, please call; she'd love to hear from you.
Teresa McVeigh************
Just got off the phone with Betty T, and she sounds groggy. If I didn't know Betty T as I do, I'd say the person I talked to had one to three more PBR's than she should have. Betty T says she's gotten a few phone calls tonight, and she'd love to hear from you. She's mainly answering questions in the simplest way she can, but we all know that will change by tomorrow when all of the anesthesia wears off.

9:30 am Update on Bionic Betty T.Grace & Peace Y'all,
I talked to Bionic Betty T. at 9:30 this morning. She was sitting up in a chair and had managed a few steps. Of course she is taking some serious pain medications.Betty says her surgeon reported the knee replacement went as expected with no surprises or complications, but found the joint to be in worse condition than imaging revealed. She did require some blood to stabilize her blood pressure.
A representative from physical rehabilitation has begun the process to hopefully admit Betty to their facility.
She asked me to tell everyone that she is "hangin' in there". Though I tried to phrase questions with "yes", "no", or short answers, she was talkative. Betty claims to have been conscious enough at one point to remember the surgeon hammering. She admitted that her physician disclosed she talked throughout her surgery and kept the surgical team entertained ... I'm imagining with Georgia Southern cheers. I'm wondering if there might be a recorder in the Operating Room.
She would love to hear from y'all so call before her cell phone battery runs down.

UPDATE: 11:30am ThursdayI had a nice conversation with Betty T - newest member of the '67 Bionic Bunch.
Much of the La-La-Pain-Meds have worn off and her voice sounded familiar again.
Betty was excited that much of her tubes and wires were removed this morning.
This is a good indication of her recovery. She also managed a little walk into the hallway.
I think if the Lake Mini were this weekend Bionic Betty would attempt to come.
She doesn't have her computer so she appreciates when a classmate calls.
Keep Betty in your prayers. She's hoping there is a bed available in therehabilitation facility - otherwise she'll be recovering at home with limited help.
God's blessings to y'all.

UPDATE: 3:30pm Thursday:
Betty phoned to say that she has been admitted and will have a room at the rehabilitationfacility for her recovery. This means she will not haveto manage as best she can or depend on others while sheattempts recovery at home. She also shared that she hadmanaged a much longer walk down the hall this afternoon.
Keep Betty in your thoughts and prayers because (as BBcan attest) this is only the beginning.

At the end of the day on Friday, I will have completed three weeks of work since going back after my surgery. I'm walking with a slight limp and no where near the pace I was setting before April 3rd. At around 3:00 in the afternoon, I am very tired and my pace gets even slower. I do believe Betty T is going to be able to run faster than me when she gets over her full knee replacement surgery. Shoot! She got a brand new knee, and all I got was a screw.

I went by tonight to see Betty. She will be moving to Walton Rehab. at 11 tomorrow morning. She was in some pain as her 2:00 meds had worn off, so they came in and gave her a shot and she should be able to sleep well tonight.
Betty is very happy she is going to Walton because she has visited people there before and and was happy with their care. Apparently I just missed seeing David Smith and Janis Boland and Betty's niece called while I was there, so she is not too lonely. She says she mostly sleeps when no one is there or on the phone and has not even felt like turning on the TV. She has a sleep mask to wear at night so she is not too disturbed when they come in to check on her. Keep calling. She loves hearing from everyone.
Teresa McVeigh- - - - - - - - - -
Teresa,
That person wasn't me with David Smith visiting Betty; I will call her this weekend.
Betty will laugh when she realizes the medication caused her to mix up names and people. I'm glad the shot gives her relief and glad that you are checking on her.
Janis Boland- - - - - - - - - -
My punctuation typo.
Should read "David Smith. Janis Boland and Betty's niece called" but perhaps I misheard who was calling also -- you know I can't hear worth a durn anymore either.
Teresa McVeighPS Where is Danny? I'm making typos and I've seen some interesting misspellings and misuse of words lately and Mr. Word Perfect has not sent in any corrections or terrible puns. Danny, are you okay?
- - - - - - - - - - - -
I am silently watching from the sidelines. I'm getting better and better at not saying anything unless I have something to say. And though I might have seen the occasional typo and I certainly was impressed for a while that Janis had driven up from Brunswick to visit Betty, it just wasn't funny enough to poke fun at. See? I just made a grammatical error myself.
I also called Betty and managed to wake her from a restful slumber, so I made it short. She did promise to mend in time for the cruise in about 2 months.

Greetings,
"Medication caused her to mix up?" Well, here's one on Bionic Betty T.
Seems she went through a bit of a time warp. She woke up hearing her cell phone ringing.
She wasn't wearing her glasses but the return call looked like mine so she called me sounding very groggy.
She apologized for waking me up so early. That was 7:30 PM this evening!

BB & Gang,
Boy is she doing great! Just talked to Betty T and she was her bubbly self and talking a mile a minute. She told me they are treating her really well and will start therapy tomorrow. Way earlier today I got a phone call from Betty Trotter Sharrock, and she wanted me to send out an email saying that she is home at last in N. Augusta. She said she had over two hundred email messages to read, and I am sure she is wondering if I have forgotten her. Impossible, Betty T! I didn't forget you, I just failed to remember to send out that email this morning. Sorry about that.
Okay, everybody! I don't want Betty T to be mad at me at the Central GA Lake Mini, so PLEASE send her a "Welcome Home" email right now and tell her something that will make me look good again. She is so excited about being home and coming to the Lake Mini.
Thank you!

How is it going, Betty Jo?I had to skip a week after my second treatment. My counts were too low.
I had my third treatment Friday, May 15.
We are still having problems with the insurance company They are still not wanting to pay for the drugs the doctor has ordered. I had one of the drugs yesterday. I get so tired of insurances telling doctors how to treat patients. They are not as qualified as the doctors. I know they have oncologist on staff at the insurance company. But the thing is, they don't see the patient; only the paper work. It gets real frustrating at times. That's when you say "God its yours. I can't handle this anymore". I just ask you to continue to pray that the insurance company will come to some agreement before my next treatment, which is the 22nd of May.
Overall, I feel good. Just get tired very easily. The dog and I are still walking 2 miles daily M-F. Trying to keep my body as healthy as I can during this chemo. I love all of you..............

UPDATE: May 22, 2009
I 'm just praising the Lord today.
We went to Mayo for my chemo treatment today. I started chemo at 1:00pm.
The insurance company called the doctor at 12:40 to finally approve the use of the drugs the doctor wanted.
John was on the phone most of yesterday and today with the president of his company and the president of the insurance company. We went straight to the top to get this resolved.
Thank all of you for your prayers and concerns.
I feel like a ton of bricks have been lifted off my shoulders.

June 6th is my daughter, Kayce's 26th Birthday. She has been planning a trip to St. Simons that weekend for months now, and has invited 6 friends from Atlanta to join her here. I know everyone will have a great time, and I know how much I will miss seeing all my '67 buddies!

I wanted to let the class know about John's knee replacements (done 7 days apart), so those who pray will pray for him. It's tough to have them BOTH done so close together, especially on a 60 yr. old/young body.
Surgery is June 2nd and June 9th.
Thank you so much!

What We Don't Know About Nashville...BB,
Looks like we will be moving to Nashville in a few months with my job at CSX and was wondering if anyone lived there or knew much about it.
Thanks,
Stephen HarrisTo my knowledge, Steve, we have only three '67 classmates that live in the state of Tennessee--Harold "Red" Roberts in Winchester, Lynn Marr Loughrie in Sevierville, and Peggy Kay Graham Tafil in Knoxville. Coach Woodroof lives in Hermitage, TN. Don't know how close those are to Nashville, but someone else might be able to tell you what you need to know.

We just returned from a "class of 69" mini at Skippers. It was a nice but small get together on Skippers' raw bar porch starting at 1:00. It was a sort of mini/birthday party. Belinda Waters Wheeler (who should have been in our Class of '67) had her 60th B-Day party. They let us have the porch for our group until 4:00pm so it made it nice and private. Had a wonderful waitress that kept our drinks full and food delivered on time. Maybe we can plan an afternoon mini up there some time in the future.

Today's mini was a small one but we had a good time. We celebrated Belinda Waters Wheeler's 60th birthday and talked the afternoon away. The location along the Darien Waterfront was lovely and the day perfect. The people at Skipper's did a wonderful job and we had our part all to ourselves.

Gary ConleyMay 29, 2009 To all our wonderful friends in the Class of 67,
It was so good to hear from yall on our anniversary, May 27th! Im sorry I dont have the time right now to reply to everyone who sent us anniversary wishes, but we wanted you all to know that we really appreciate your kind words.Dean and I celebrated our anniversary twice this week. First, we took off work Friday, the 22nd (Deans 61st birthday) and drove to Seneca, S.C. where we spent the Memorial Day weekend driving around Lake Keowee looking for retirement property. We didnt realize that Athens, Ga. was less than two hours away, so I called my brother, John (and wife Gwen) on Saturday and we drove to Athens (after scouting the lake country) for the evening. John cooked us a wonderful meal which we enjoyed on their porch.
On our anniversary, we celebrated with our kids at a local restaurant where the chef is a friend of ours. The food was superb and after the meal, the chef brought us complementary desertstwo plates full of about 5 different kinds of low calorie goodies! By the way, I had shrimp and grits (my favorite), but it was different from the southern style served in Georgia and South Carolina. The chef made a Louisiana Cajun version that was rich and spicy with a tomato base gravy. It was good, but I still like the southern style better.
After we got home from dinner, we read all the wonderful emails from everyone. Thanks again to our good friends on the e-train for providing a perfect ending to our anniversary. The Class of 67 ROCKS. We love you guys!! We sure are going to miss seeing everyone whos going to the lake mini in June, but well be thinking of you.
Hugs to all,

Anne,
Perhaps I should reconsider my philosophy as regards to anniversaries--I personally consider it a private celebration between Stephen and me and like it to be "romantic" and just the two of us. I am not on the anniversary list, but you and many others seem to really enjoy the greetings, so I am sending you belated greetings and glad you had two such nice celebrations. And secondly, Louisiana is in the South and their cuisine is Southern. Many dishes are basic Southern cooking, but usually with more spices and seasoning....(This "hot'n'spicy" conversation continues on Brunswick Stew page 7)

Wow : Maybe we can have our two chefs to have a hamburger and hotdog cookoff cajun style Saturday.
anonymous ... (Perry James)- - - - - - - - - -
Perry. Maybe one cajun and one creole so we have two choices to sample?
Too bad that Arnell Chambers (Willie's Weenee wagon) is not available to add a third choice to hot dogs. Even though he is gone the food is still as good as ever since his wife who did all the work anyway is still running the place.
Bill Parker- - - - - - - - - - - -
Bill: Yea, I cannot believe that he is dead. I talked to him about twice a week, Willie's was a regular stop when I worked for the Guard. I got a kick the first time I took my wife there and she asked for unsweetened tea. Willie let her know that they did not sell that there and they had no plans to ever sell unsweetened tea. Looking forward to seeing you.

I doubt we can make it for lunch at your place Saturday. I am working nights this week (9p to 7a) and, although I'm not working Fri. night, I will probably not be turned around in my sleep patterns enough to get up early to get there for lunch. I can bring the aforesaid boudin and some andouille (a different Cajun sausage) with some Zatarain's Creole mustard if anyone wants to have that for hors d'oeuvres--could grill it or otherwise best to warm it up. Boudin is a sausage with rice in it. I prefer (and have) boudin blanc, but there is also boudin rouge (with pig blood). Andouille is the preferred sausage for jambalaya and gumbo in Cajun country, but even Cajuns will make do with kielbasa. These sausages are very Cajun. You can find andouille here, but it is not always very good. The boudin blanc a friend brought back from a Cajun grocery in March. I have some Boudin in the freezer. Now THAT's Cajun (it's a sausage).

The Golden-Penned, Steep-Sloped, Vicar of NC ...To The Vicar Who Lives On Land Steeper-Than-A-Horses-Face:
Yeah. The above author, whos written tons of books on tons of subjects, compiled that one 10-15 years ago, coming up with one of those Why didnt I think of that? ideas. He collected many official DOD citations for valor, Silver Star and above, awarded to Special Forces guys. Then called each person and asked for an in-your-own-words recap of the actual human emotions, lead-ups, peripheral events, come-downs, etc., concerning that event. The author couldnt be jived cause he had the DOD account of the action right in front of him. Made 100 phone calls, recorded 100 conversations, picked out 30, handed the tapes to a secretary Poof! best seller in six weeks from start to finish, with virtually no writing.
Sidebar: Whats-Her-Name and I are possibly somewhat odd in the arena of former-soldiers (meaning all U.S. military). Got out with her in her 20s and me in my 30s, did advanced degrees, spawned civilian urchins, launched new civilian careers/lives, and the army faded into the memory mist.
As 5th. - 6th. generation soldiers we are pleased with our past service, but have no significant army stuph displayed in our home, our kids werent much aware of our military background til they were in their late teens, and weve never had the time or desire to belong to military organizations or attended related gatherings, but very strongly support those who do.
Mine was not the situation of the countless brave and selfless American draftees or patriotic enlistees who gave up their civilian lives and dreams to serve. My service wasnt a personal sacrifice, of any kind. I believed, 101%, in everything I did on behalf of the U.S., I asked for everything I got, I intentionally put myself into those units and into those situations I enthusiastically sought it and enjoyed it.
But, atomic egos abound in this arena, and a lack of overt after-service involvement, exacerbated by my flippant attitude about virtually everything, has, over the years (even on active duty), 'was taken as a personal afront and really irritated the dog snot outta a pig-pot of military-leaning folks actually made a number ofem very angry and even vindictive.
Howsomever, Memorial Day is a bit emotional for both of us. We have 30 years of active duty between us, a gasnillion military and ex-military friends, generations of genetically-connected soldiers behind us, and I have 69 friends on the wall.
But, you're the only ex-military Padre we know who lives on a slope steeper-than-a-horse's-face.

Tomorrow after work, Guilford and I will be heading south to St. Simons Island to check in on my mother and see the other family members. We can't decide whether we want to come home on Sunday or lay over until Monday. It would be good to be back home with a day of rest ahead of us before we go back to work on Tuesday.
After tomorrow morning your email traffic will be slowing down even more for a couple of days. I hope you will continue to send messages in though, because I will be sending them out as soon as we get home. Perry James called today and said that one couple had to back out of coming to the Central GA Lake Mini. We were hoping for around a hundred, but it looks like 53 or so of us will just have to have all the fun. Surely there are some of us who will be coming that just haven't made that commitment, for some reason. Maybe it's not "in the cards" for us to expect more than fifty or sixty Class of '67 classmates and spouses, and that brings this question to mind. Should we open this Mini up to our Friends of '67 who might live nearby or just want to come and join us from wherever? You don't have to answer that, because we'd for sure get every imaginable answer and not be able to make a decision. There are three more weeks to go, and we can talk more about it as the days go by. Our hosts, Perry, Gary Conley and Lynette Miller Rivers should have the final say, probably.
One more thing I'd like you to do for me. Please pray for kindness and respect to control my tongue and what I say this weekend. My Mom (Bless her heart!) will want me to try every ointment and home remedy imaginable to make my surgical scars go away. She'll probably have something that will keep me from limping, too. I can remember last year, my sister, Gail, and I were rummaging through her medicine cabinet and found some prescription drugs that were way outdated. Get this now.....we even found a bottle of aspirin that expired back in 1961. Can you believe that? Kennedy wouldn't be assassinated until two years later. We were all still dreaming of what life on the campus of Glynn Academy would be like while riding the bus home from Jr. High School at that time. Even though it may sound like I am trying to be funny, I don't want my Mom to think that I am not appreciative of her motherly care. Know what I mean? Pray!
Y'all talk amongst yourselves. Take a classmate out to lunch. Call someone you haven't seen in a while. Call Betty T. Read all the old emails on our Class of '67 Email Archive web site. Wear sun block, but have fun!
Love to you all,
Billy Brewer ~ Class of '67************

Hi Bill,
Has everyone gone over to facebook?
I don't receive any regular e-mails from the group or haven't had any lately.
Just wondering.
Ruth McCrary VaughanThanks for asking, Ruth.
You are still on the active email list so you should have received the email message about Guilford and me going south to St. Simons Island to see my mother this weekend. We got home after 9:00pm tonight, and sent no emails while we were away from the home computer.
Prior to this weekend, most of the messages I have been receiving have come from the Friends of '67 (other graduating classes from the 60's). Our Class of '67 classmates haven't sent much in lately. Months and months ago I sent out a message asking every active '67 emailer whether or not they wanted to continue to receive messages originated by these other folks outside of our class, some that we know and many that we don't. About 48 said they would like to continue to hear from anyone from the 60's decade, and some added that they had many friends outside of our class. Well over that number responded and said, no, they wanted to receive messages from our '67 folks only. Since that time we have had no further additions to that group, but we have had five that have asked to be removed. The Loud List and the Quiet List do not get these messages. Only those who have asked to be put on that Friends of '67 list are receiving these messages, some of which are on the Loud and Quiet List.
The options are still open for joining the various lists. The opportunity to become the "email operator" for the Friends of '67 list is still very much open and available. If you have any questions about this or your choices, I'd like the opportunity to discuss this privately with you.

Trip & Limp ReportThanks for asking, George and Teresa.
The trip to St. Simons Island was a very good one overall. Since I had to work on Friday, the day of travel, I was a bit restless on the way down. I couldn't get comfortable, and I think maybe it was just that I was tired. We didn't leave until about 6:30pm, therefore we didn't get there until about 12:30, after making a couple of rest stops. Mom was still up and waiting on us, bless her heart. I was surprised that she didn't break out the miracle ointment for my surgery scar, and that she was more intent on handing off some "no telling how old" Calladril lotion to Guilford to combat her Shingles rash spots that are already drying up and healing. She must have had a mild case. They say those cases are brought on by stress, and she has had her share of that lately.
We slept till 10:00am on Saturday morning. Since the bulk of the traffic on Demere Road has been rerouted through the old Sea Pak location and the airport, Mom's house is super quiet now so sleep comes easy. We had lunch at 4th of May. Guess what I had. Pot Roast--it's my favorite, along with macaroni and cheese and squash casserole. My sister, Gail ('65) and her hubby, John Owens, came over and joined us. After lunch we took our normal cruise around the Pier and stopped to take a look at the New Fun Park in the shadow of the Lighthouse. We didn't actually go in to see it up close, but studied it over the fence. Alex, if you were a dwarf (little person), you might actually have room to swim laps, but to me a good turn and kick off of one side would put you back on the other side almost immediately. I counted at least twelve life guards there, all in their chartreuse green T-shirts. Overall, I was not impressed, but walked back to the car depressed knowing what could have been if they had just put back what was previously there. Sorry for being so negative.
Mom, Guilford and I enjoyed a nice seafood dinner at Jenright's on US 17. Guilford had the Flounder dinner, Mom had a fried shrimp appetizer and a bowl of cheese grits, and I had the large shrimp dinner with fries, cheese grits, and hush puppies. Guilford said she thought it was just as good as The Buccaneer Club, but without the drive.
On Sunday we skipped church and cleaned up Mom's house really good. I love her Kirby vacuum cleaner. Then we met John and Gail for lunch at Mullet Bay on the Island. Steve Jackson asked us what in the world we were doing going out to eat on Memorial Day with all the tourists on the Island. It didn't take us but about ten minutes to get a table.
Throughout the whole weekend I didn't see anyone I knew, except a couple from Newnan, walking down in the Village area. We saw them as we were riding by, so they didn't see us.
The drive home was much better for me than the trip down. My leg didn't give me any problems. We ran into about three terrible rain storms, and had to slow down so we could see where we were going. We left at around 4:00pm and made it home at about 9:30, even with the slowdowns.
Mom seems to be doing well as she nears her 87th birthday in November. Her hearing is not what it used to be, but she is still very alert to what is going on around her, and always provides the love and hospitality only a mother knows how to give. It was indeed good being "back home" and on the Island, and we are already looking forward to our next trip, whenever that might be.
We'll be off and running again this coming weekend as Guilford's niece will be having her first child. She lives in Chattanooga, well, actually on Lookout Mountain on the Georgia side. Just going up for the day and coming home that night on either Saturday or Sunday. We haven't decided yet.
Then the next weekend, we will be heading to the Central GA Lake Mini on Saturday, June 6th, to spend a day with our classmates and friends. Guilford may allow me to do this by myself, she says, but we'll see how it goes between now and then. We have 55 on the list who plan to be there, and hoping that about that many more will take advantage of the opportunity to attend a Class of '67 gathering that will be so close to many of us who live in the central and northern part of the state. Lunch is at 11:00 or so. It is very important that Perry has a good count of those planning to enjoy the catered dinner which starts on Saturday afternoon at 5:30, at his house on Lake Sinclair. Gary and Lynette will host the Sunday activities at Gary's house on Lake Oconee. Be there or be square!
That's probably more than you needed to know about our trip. Why don't you write in and tell us what you did over the Memorial Day Weekend?
Love to all,
Billy Brewer ~ Class of '67************
UPDATE: May 28, 2009
Today my surgeon told me he was discharging me, and now I am free to do just about anything I want to do. How 'bout that? So, the first thing I did was go back to the church and plant 144 purple petunia plants. I'll cut the grass tomorrow.
I've already had a talk with Betty Trotter Sharrock today, and we have decided we'll just sit in our chairs on dry land at the Central GA Lake Mini, talk about our operations and compare scars, while the others are out pontooning, "personal water crafting", and otherwise risking an unexpected swim in the lake. We are hoping Becky Sorrow Wahl of Augusta will come down and join us. She's had it rough lately with the loss of one of her dogs, or should I say one of her "family members". Becky, why don't you come on down with Betty T? We'll put your chair between us and reach over and hug you every now and then. June 7th also marks one year since Becky lost her mom. That means even more hugs, Becky.
There are many more that should be coming. Do I need to start naming names? Nahhh...I won't do that, but you know who you are. We'd love to add you to our list and take your order for fried catfish filet or grilled chicken at Saturday night's catered meal at Perry's house. If you can't make it on Saturday, there will be just as much fun going on at Lake Oconee at Gary's house on Sunday. Come for one day or the other if you can't come for both, and we'll see you there.
Bring a chair, throw a cooler filled with ice in your trunk just in case, bring some sun screen, a "lake" towel, and whatever else you think will make you happier than just being there with true FRIENDS from your Class of '67. There will be plenty of photo opps, but this time we are only going to send out pictures to those who were there. Just kidding! What about bug spray, Perry and Gary? Do y'all have bugs on the Lake?
Life is good!

What I Did over Memorial Day WeekendBilly B.,
Don't know if I am the first to report in on the Memorial Day Weekend, but I had a very uneventful weekend as I stayed home and didn't go anywhere. I'm getting my things together for my vacation trip June 6-14 to Gatlinburg, and getting ready to have a housemate for awhile - my sister and her husband, who have lived for the past 5 years in Littleton, NH, are moving back to Brunswick. My sister starts work in the CCU at Southeast Ga. Regional on June 15, so she will be at my house when I return home. She will be living with me until their house sells (hopefully) in N.H. or until her husband decides it's time to move down here with her. I'm really excited to have her back home with me!Billy, glad to know you are recovering nicely. It will, as you know, take some time to get back to yourself before the surgery - you've been through an ordeal. By the time the Lake Mini weekend arrives you should be feeling much stronger. Hope all of you who are attending the Lake Mini have a safe trip there and back home. Hopefully, there will be another Lake Mini next year I can look forward to attending.
I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone else about their Memorial Day Weekend.

What I did over Memorial Day Weekend
Got back from the mountains last night. Rained most of the time up on the Parkway, but was fairly decent in Black Mountain and Waynesville.

What I did over Memorial Day Weekend
Helen and I had a terrific Memorial Day Weekend also. We spent most of our time at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Despite the constant threat of rain this festival was the best ever in all the years we have been going. The powers that be closed off several streets down town near the landing and set up outdoor stages. We caught performances by Dave Brubeck, Marcus Roberts, Stanley Clarke, Bill Frisell, Dr. John, the Latin Jazz allstars and a young woman we had never heard of before named Vivian Green. She was a tremendous surprise. On Monday, Helen and I went indoor rock-climbing in the morning for a few hours and then I got caught up on my yard work before the rain decided to return.
Life at 60 is pretty good so far!

I will be in Gunnison, CO until June 7th which is only about an hour from Montrose. What in the world is Bill Ungerer doing in CO? I LOVE it out there (except during the winter months)! Would be cool if I could run into him on one of the trips. We are going to check on Tim's rental property, do some fishing, kayaking and sight seeing (love to go on adventure trips) and maybe some hiking.
Let me know when something else comes up around St Simons this summer and maybe I can make one of them. My friends have their sail boat at St Simon's Island, and said I could go stay on it any time. They will be moving it to Charleston soon though. Still that is not that far from Brunswick is it?

In Search of ... Jackie ReynoldsWhen I got home this afternoon, Guilford told me there was a message for me on the voice mail, and guess who it was.................Jackie Reynolds. I called him back and do you know that he is planning to come to the Central GA Lake Mini on Saturday, June 6th? Sad to say, Jackie will not be bringing his wife. She passed away about five years ago. Put him down for grilled chicken, Perry, and you might want to give him a call and talk with him about spinning some records for us. Says he is a mobile DJ, and has even recorded some talking songs on a CD.
Well, needless to say, Jackie is now back with us via email and sounds excited to reconnect with all of us again. Welcome aboard the E-Train, Jackie. We saved a seat just for you! Okay, Class of '67, it's time to overwhelm Jackie with emails to let him know how much we appreciate him linking up with us again. Thanks to Liz Wiggs Critchley for putting this reconnection together for us. That's at least two that have been added because of Liz. Way to go, Girl!
Contact me for Jackie's email address. I told Jackie he might hear from some of us tonight, so don't let me down.
Here we go again! Everybody hang on. There's curves ahead and around every bend might be another missing '67 classmate.
